Last semester, our science teacher gave us a very interesting homework assignment. We had to work in small groups and create a project about renewable energy. It was my favorite project of the whole year, and I learned a lot from it.
My group had three people: me, Tom, and Lisa. We decided to make a model of a solar oven. A solar oven uses the heat from the sun to cook food. We thought this was a great idea because it is good for the environment and does not use any electricity.
First, we needed to find the right materials. We used a simple pizza box, some aluminum foil, black paper, and clear plastic. We covered the inside of the box with the aluminum foil. The foil acts like a mirror to catch the sunlight. Then, we put black paper on the bottom because the color black gets hot very quickly. Finally, we put the clear plastic on top to keep the hot air inside the box.
After we finished building our solar oven, we wanted to test it. We waited for a very sunny day. We put a small piece of chocolate and a marshmallow inside the oven. We placed the box outside in the sun and waited for about thirty minutes. When we opened the box, the chocolate and marshmallow were melted and warm! It was like magic, but it was actually science.
When we presented our project to the class, everyone was surprised. The teacher gave us a very good grade. I loved this project because I learned how to work well with my classmates. We also learned that we can use nature to do amazing things. I hope we can have more fun projects like this in the future.
